Away from city lights, M15 is visible to the naked eye. It appears in the constellation Pegasus as a hazy spot about one third the diameter of the full Moon. M15 is the 15th object in the Messier catalogue, compiled by French astronomer Charles Messier in the late 1700s. Many of MessierΓÇÖs nebulae (M88 and globular clusters like M15) have turned out to be galaxies.
M15ΓÇÖs birth probably dates back to that of the Milky Way itself, when most globular clusters formed. More recently, globular clusters have been found in the center of the merging galaxy system NGC 7252.
